Describe the Feature

Be able to upload and display files in the .png format. Currently uploading a png will auto-convert it to a jpeg, losing transparency and often increasing the filesize.

Some artists rely on the transparent png format for their art, especially pixel artists.

I definitely agree that the ability to upload in .png format is a very important feature for the artist community. In addition to the transparency loss and filesize increases Peter-Dolby has pointed out, there is a loss in quality that comes along with converting from the source format of an image. Definitely hoping this can be added in the future.
