Investigate independent versioning for schema #267

Having some way of versioning the schema would be nice... we agree storing it in another repo isn't a good idea.

Now this is implemented as TypedDicts in the code, I think the version number of the repo is probably sufficient. Can revisit this later if this isn't the case
