resolve failed build of documentation #208

With merge of #206 (from issue #172), the documentation fails to build. The Python code style and reformatting by black are central to the problems. Does not appear to be a Python error, just formatting and compliance with PEP8.

Needs to stay on main branch to activate documentation build
