Hi, I'm the author of "mnm", a decentralized store-and-forward message service based on an open protocol (TMTP). It's open source.

Would you be willing to add a link to my project on the bluesky-community.net homepage, under Tools and Apps?

Hi Liam, thanks for sharing this. While I'm not a decision maker, one thing of importance that's been asked of other projects is approximately how many active users do you have at this time? And any other user related and system usage details would be appreciated I think.

hey Robert not sure if you actually emailed him back, you might have to do it in github

mnm is software (server & client), not a service that I run, so I have no way to track monthly active users.

I began doing publicity this year after v0.9.0 (of the client), and had no established social media presence, so I've seen only a handful of website visits weekly. My outreach has focused on the infosec community, but I've recently realized that they're overwhelmed trying to protect existing systems, and lack capacity to evaluate alternative infrastructure. Also my initial positioning statement wasn't effective. The project has been self-funded to date, so there's no marketing budget.

All that said, Github shows ~40 server binary downloads (more sites may have opted to build from source), and almost 500 client binary downloads of v0.9.0. Given the pre-beta status of the project, and publicity hurdles, I'm quite pleased with that.

I'm doing this because the world desperately needs a safe, productive, decentralized email network, and nobody was working on that; even as the SMTP network has become a potent vehicle for cyberattacks, dominated by a tiny number of commercial services which decide who can send anything at all.

Cory Doctorow recently wrote this about commercial dominance of email: https://doctorow.medium.com/dead-letters-73924aa19f9d

hey @networkimprov sorry for the delay in response - so decision is that it would not right now be on the home page of the blueskycommunity.net, but can be linked into the ecosystem docs - possibly an enlarged version of the main ecosystem doc. Can you submit this as a PR to https://github.com/blueskyCommunity/aozora/blob/main/ECOSYSTEM/suggestions.md ?

gvelez17 commented 2 years ago

@DevMenna lets leave this open for now to give @networkimprov a chance to submit the pr

Hi Golda, thanks for getting back to me! I'll create the PR.

Is the Ecosystem Overview posted on any Bluesky website? Or just in the GitLab repo?

Asking, because if mnm/TMTP gets promoted out of "Suggestions", it would be nice to be listed on a website, vs a repo, as the repo hosts add rel="nofollow" to hrefs :-/

~BTW, I had never seen that GitLab site when reading about Bluesky; what places link to it?~ EDIT: I see that it's linked from both the main and community bluesky pages!

FWIW, TMTP doesn't define a universal identity scheme the way that email & Matrix do. Rather, it can leverage any third party identity and/or authentication credential for registration/login, at the discretion of each TMTP site. (Currently it offers OpenID Connect.) More on the mnm FAQ.

PR added! See #30.

I'm happy to create a detailed page for TMTP if you plan to promote it to the main Ecosystem list!

PR merged, thanks!

Is there a plan to review Suggestions, and promote them to the Ecosystem pages?
