4 months ago Next time it happens, if there is still shell accss, try free -h, which reports about memory in use (notably, if a lot of swap memory is in use, it's sign of trouble), i addition to top, which reports about the most cpu-intensive processes and their respective memory allocation (this time I get that there weren't)

4 months ago I ran both commands before restarting the computer, but didn't find much.

No immediate action needed, writing here to document the problem.
In nomachine last08e was first very slow at first and then the display froze entirely (no improvement in the following hour). SSH was still working without noticeable delays.
Restarting the nxserver didn't help. There was space in the home directory (no giant logfiles). No memory intensive processes running. Pipeline not running.
In the end we rebooted the computer and it appeared to be back to normal.
