If you're thinking about an in-browser version (re the README 'future' section), two libraries might be of use:

• pdf.js from Mozilla for parsing and display PDFs as needed.
• annotator.js an awesome in-browser annotator tool that's super customizable and set up to use any REST-type remote store.
