Enables gen3-endpoints #300

When building a dockerfile for gen3-endpoints , noticed that there is some code on this branch that is needed to run gen3-endpoints.

Have cleaned up this branch so that it only adds improvements / non endpoint code

Don't need to merge this to main. Going to reference this branch as a sub-module in the grip-endpoints repository. Closing this PR for now. Might open it back up in the future.
