EPIC: Main Room Layout #4

@Stephanymtr please share the measurements you've collected for the main room of @home 🏡 and any layout iterations you've worked on so we can capture & discuss. 🙏

I had created a pure Montessori playroom, but because I lost all my work, I only redid the layout we talked about: Montessori inspired classroom that: welcomes A's current toys/activities, includes a NIDO safe area and contains a special wow factor These are very rough measurements: 4.3m x 9.5m. Please ignore measurements between windows/doors etc.

Montessori inspired:

I included four of the five areas we see in a Montessori classroom: Language Math Culture Arts

The first three are located on the far left side. The rectangles are the shelves where the activities will be displayed. The kiddos will be able to work on the floor/rug or on desks. I didn't include the Practical life in this classroom because as we talked, it will be placed in the dining room area. I placed Arts and Art supplies on the right side of the room. You will find A's art desk against the window/door. Art supplies/activities are located on the shelves. Gui will also be able to set up A's music station across the art area. It feels that Art and Music should stay close to each other. The kids will be able to use the floor/rug area for dancing, singing, playing etc The teepee is also there in the corner for A to run into haha

NIDO area

You will find the NIDO area in the middle of the room because it's basically where you can get the most sunlight in the room. I then proceeded to place low to the ground shelves around the NIDO movement area, so that the little ones could crawl to reach for their activities. N and I talked about creating some sort of super safe area for the babies in case we needed to step out of the room for a second. I thought of using the shelves as baby gates. They won't protect the little ones like actual baby gates, but at least they'd be separated from the older kids. I left the little room between shelves for adults to come in and out, so we could add a baby gate there.

I thought we could use the 2 outside corners of this area for plants. However, we could also use those corners to store mats or other things.

WOW factor

This was really tricky because I had loads of ideas, but none of them felt safe knowing that there is a NIDO area in the room. However, I will still share some photos below of things we could add/remove as we go. I decided to place this wow factor in the Movement area for the bigger kiddos. Therefore, you will find the pikler triangle here. I also added a bridge and an arch to the pikler triangle. I believe this on its own will impress all parents and kiddos. They will see it on the left side as soon as they walk into the room.

You will see a climbing sign between the movement area and music area. That was me suggesting we take an extra step into this movement area idea by placing a climbing wall with some gymnastics rings. I will add some inspo photos below.

I mean, we could even make it into a monkey bar that starts off as a climbing wall next to the music area, goes over the doorway as a monkey bar and down where the pikler triangle is as a pole or a rope, but again I do feel that this would be quite unsafe for the age range of the kids we will be welcoming in this space. Although, if you like the idea, we could potentially cover this area with a net, like these for example:

This but sideways over the doorway: image

other options too: image image

Feedback is welcome, please!

Few questions: Should we have a changing/diaper station in this room? I only added enough chairs for 3 kids. Will that be enough ? Do we want to add any storage/cupboards in the classroom ?

Sssiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiccckk!!! 😍 #want! Ok. this is an excellent mood board! ❤️ Please let's get some of these photos printed. 🖨️ https://github.com/dwyl/hq/issues/569#issuecomment-1326494638 Where are we going to start? 💭

@nelsonic I printed everything out. Thank you for your help. Where would you like me to set up the mood board ? image

nelsonic commented 1 year ago

Good question. I think we should put up the pictures in situ today. 💭

nelsonic commented 1 year ago

@iteles do you know where we have blue/white tac to temporarily put these up or should we use our non-perm double-sided tape? 💭

Stephanymtr commented 1 year ago

@nelsonic, @iteles and I briefly talked about my suggestions for the layout. Below are a few points that I remember:

-> Switch current art/music area with math, language and culture area because it's sunnier on the west side of the room. -> Music area needs to be bigger. -> Include more seating, so that all children have chairs. -> Display art supplies as activities on trays. -> Link the Movement/Fun area to the north instead of the west side of the room, as I suggested previously:

"...we could even make it into a monkey bar that starts off as a climbing wall next to the music area, goes over the doorway as a monkey bar and down where the pikler triangle is as a pole or a rope..."

If you guys remember anything else we talked (regarding the layout), please share. @nelsonic verbally mentioned a couple of fun ideas he had for the space, so if you want to share with us, please do. We can gather all of our thoughts in one place and start working on this.

nelsonic commented 1 year ago

@Stephanymtr this is a good summary of our conversation. 👍 We need to plan for the potential numbers we want to accomodate and thus the 3 chairs we have might not be "enough" ... They are certainly "enough" in the short-term #7 But this layout/planning exercise is to maximise the available space for the longer term.

All solid ideas. I'm a huge fan of multi-level/tiered room as it expands the imagination of the children to think vertically! 🗼

iteles commented 10 months ago

@Stephanymtr Now we've had a chance to live with a few of these changes, what are your thoughts on how the space has been working and how it might work better for a multi-age playgroup?

Stephanymtr commented 10 months ago

@iteles The changes we did worked well last year, but A2 has outgrow her NIDO area. She is definitely an explorer! The ballet corner, ball pit and the trampoline seem to be her current favourite places. As for A1, he enjoys reading books and playing games in the ball pit. You can also find him in the there playing golf, rugby, football, baseball, .... ⚾ 🏈 🏐 ball games! However, the kiddos haven’t really been taking full advantage of all the activities being offered in the playroom. I personally don’t think changing the layout now is as important as improving the systems and strategies currently used to keep up with the activities presented to the two kiddos. When the new system is implemented, then the layout can be catered to the new children that will be coming.

Layout suggestions: What are the ages of the children you will be welcoming in the space? I can make a few suggestions on the current layout, but I can only do it based off on the ages of the 2 children who are using the space atm.

@iteles In case we don't have time to chat about it... as requested, here are a few changes/suggestions I thought of while playing with Ami.

-Have an open space for floor activities -More kids=more chairs -Move rug & trampoline -Remove broken mirror and install new ones in the ballet corner -Remove all hard balls from the space because if they hit it too hard, they could break break things/hurt others. Soft ball need to be placed at a strategic place so that little ones are not tempted to bite/eat it. -Remove the tall shelving until OR attach it to the wall leaving a learning tower nearby for the older ones to be able to reach their toys without climbing the unit and potentially hurting themselves. -Set up the music area in a way that instruments are safe when put away as opposed to being “put away” on the floor. -Treat all the arts and craft as toys and rotate them leaving a couple of safe options for all ages available/within reach displayed on trays. -The art section should also have prep materials like cloths (for wiping spills), little containers (for water) hooks ( for bibs that children can put on easily) etc

@nelsonic Do you know if this exists on any device in an editable format?

nelsonic commented 7 months ago

@iteles nope. but we can replicate it together quick-a-lee in Google Docs (Draw) or InkScape if you have T25m. 👩‍💻
