DIY Musical instrument recognition game

A is a huge fan of instruments (particularly orchestral instruments since I got him "My first book about the Orchestra").

He has started to try to pick instruments out of music in the car.

To facilitate this interest and encourage a keen ear, I would like to give him some guided practice at home. Seeing as we have the Yoto Player https://github.com/bmhco/shared/issues/48 which he loves, I thought this would be a good vehicle for the musical portion.

Task

Part 1

To seek out a group of musical excerpts (first of individual instruments and then of simple compositions) that we can put on the Yoto player for A to cycle through. Pair this with flashcards with photos of the instruments so that he can create the visual association even if he's unsure of the name.

• [ ] Seek out single instrument song excerpts for each of the following, preferably around 1 minute in length so that incorrect guesses can be accommodated, the instrument can be further discussed or so that A can continue to listen to them after he's guessed the instrument if he wants:

  • [ ] Level 1: 5/6 individual instruments that are quite different
  • [ ] Level 2: 10 instruments including some from the same family
  • [ ] Level 3A-Z: Add in missing instruments from each family, one family at a time (e.g. We had violin and the double bass in strings, not we add in the cello and viola and he has to discern between them)
  • [ ] Level 4 (which may be interesting to do as a level 3 if he gets tired of individual instruments): Arrangements with a maximum of 4 instruments which come in either staggered or somewhat easily audible
  • [ ] Level 5 and up: Increase complexity of pieces - to pair with youtube I reckon so that he can understand it a bit better? We'll see how he learns!

Part 2

Create the instrument cards which we will need to cut out and laminate. These should have:

• A photo of the instrument
• The name in lower case letters underneath (in a very dark grey)
• 3 should fit across a portrait A4 page, making them around credit card size

I have 2 requests:

• Please add the bows to the Strings, as this is the only real thing A will have to guide himself by in both the real world and other random images of instruments out in the wild
• Make the lines around the cards as light as you can - they should be guidelines for cutting out, not visible on the cards when completed
  • Also, please feel free to make the corners straight as we'll use a corner rounder on the final cards but cannot guarantee it'll follow these lines exactly

These flashcards will be smaller than the previous ones we have made before. It was a bit tricky, but I tried to maintain the scale size of each instrument. I added bows to the string instruments, but I wanted to confirm with if that's what you had in mind. I can find photos of people playing those instruments if you feel that will be better than just the photos of instruments alone. I also changed font color to dark grey. Is that shade ok? I made the lines around the cards as light as I could. Bc I have A2 sleeping on me when doing pc work, I lower the brightness of the pc screen so I will leave this edit for last on the other pages, otherwise I won't be able to see the borders of each card 😆

I reckon let's try it this way first and make new ones if we need.

Only comment is that the piccolo is a tiny flute so if we're sizing the string section, we probably want to scale size those 2 as well 😃

I knew the sizes couldn't be all the same 😅 I'm not familiar most of these instruments. I'll scale down that image. Lmk if you see anything else that's off.

Gui already found and edited a couple single instrument song excerpts: Piano, fagote, violino, contrabaixo, tímpanos e marimba. I have already gotten these instruments onto the Yoto player.

@iteles, could you have a look at the images/flashcards ? Is there anything else you would like me to edit before printing them out?

It looks like Gui added 4 more songs. Based on their names, the first one is a clarinet and 2nd one is a flute. My best guess for the 3rd one is a cravo and the 4th is a cello.

Can I add these to the Yoto player or not yet ? I know you have broken down into difficulty levels, so that is not confusing for A1.
