s/using/using\ espresso-contrib in the title. I seem to be unable to edit it.

This is happening because espresso's deps on support libs are out of date. Will
be fixed in the coming release.

Still seeing this with espress-contrib 2.2. Is there a fix coming still?

The issue says it was closed April 2, but I'm still getting the error with core
& contrib 2.2 when dealing with RecyclerView. Any word of a fix?

This is still an issue with espresso-contrib-2.2.1. The workaround by Jacob
Duron on SO [0] works for me however:
androidTestCompile ('com.android.support.test.espresso:espresso-contrib:2.2.1') {
exclude module: 'support-annotations'
exclude module: 'support-v4'
exclude module: 'support-v13'
exclude module: 'recyclerview-v7'
}

Also, there were many other "hazardous" changes reported for me, e.g. in the
support-v4 versions of Fragment and DialogFragment, so the RecyclerView usage
is not the only problem.
