our resources on Triolith #5

just had one more idea? why not give the girls access to Triolith? I think from an administrative point of view it should be possible to add them there? all the data we could put into swestore?!

This is a good idea. However, some new money in the Carnegie Mellon air quality group has made it possible for them to purchase a new server for use in the group. On the other hand, this server will not be supported a far as I know, except by Jinhyok at CMU, who is pretty good with computing technology. In other words, I don't think they will be short on resources. It will take a little effort to get them set up, and there's no guarantee it will be helpful for their productivity.

I see three benefits of involving them on Triolith: 1) They will get the opportunity to learn a queuing system and how a large-scale, multi-user cluster environment works. 2) They will be able to make use of the supported tools on Triolith (valgrind for instnace). 3) It might somehow facilitate a closer link between all of our work, but I'm not sure if this would actually manifest. At the very least, as we develop this code, if we see any differences in the results our codes produce, we would be able to rule out differences in machine architecture as a root cause.

I am for it if they are interested!

I totally agree with your benefits. Another benefit would be that they would actually get SNIC support and benefit from the good documentation that is available for Triolith. All of us using the same machine would only make life for all of us easier, in my opinion. That is, I have no clue how good or bad their own server (and the support they get for it) would be.

I can't find the email (if I ever had one) of the new cluster specs, but it's the best technology $40k+ can buy so not too shabby. They're waiting to install it in a room in Civil Engineering, which apparently has a new tech support push that they're trying to take advantage of. I'm not sure how much that will help us, but it's probably better than nothing. On the other hand // in the meantime, seeing a working system would be interesting. I'm not sure how much we'd use it in practice, but it might be worth at least a tour through!

@Marshlight this sounds indeed not too shabby, indeed. Having a good machine without support though can still make your life hard. So how will the support be for you guys over there? One really good thing about Triolith is the support (it's all in English). If you would join us on Triolith, the stuff you would learn there would also be highly applicable to your cluster at CMU or any other cluster.
