Where there is a dropdown list of the default color options, include "none". At least in the shapefile tab, it is not included, and leaving it blank causes an error when the images start processing.

A couple of questions:

Default of black is fine. When this happened, I think I was trying to assign a face color (fill) for a polygon shapefile, but use "none" for the edge color (outline). So the purpose was not to make the shapefile invisible (although your on/off toggle idea could be a partial solution to avoid the separate issue of users needing to re-build the stacks of shapefiles).
