Offline Maps

Is it possible to get myTracks to cache google maps so they work when there is 
no cell signal? I recently was on a hike and turned back because I didn't know 
how close I was to my destination. it was only another 600 feet in elevation... 
if it was possible to cache some locations (i.e. national parks and such) I 
think it would make this app far superior.

Agree that this is the only feature holding this application back. Don't 
understand licensing issues, as you can download offline maps using google 
maps, yet cannot use them in the my tracks application -- which is Google as 
well. Instead of the standard 'it is a licensing issue', maybe the terms need 
to be reviewed, as with this feature this application will be unstoppable.

A quick solution proposal that we could hack up in a week is:
Use another maps app that provides offline maps, topographic contours, as well 
as offline search and navigation (nogago Maps ( 
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nogago.android.maps&hl=de)) 
and have this app access My Tracks services.
Drawback:
User would have to use a separate app to view the track and has to activate the 
apropriate setting in My Tracks.

As I said before. Viewranger does it all. Mytracks is more battery effective 
but Viewranger has offline Ordinance maps along with tracking, path mapping, 
gpx import & way more. It's not to hard to import your tracks into Google as 
well if you do a little Googling.

Licensing agreements? I call BS - Bunch of lawyers just arguing in a conference 
room. They aren't the ones hiking and cycling without the use of an offline 
map. Posers. :(

Being able to download sections of the terrain map in offline mode would be

I'm just surprised since MyTracks is to be an open source example, provided by 
Google, why they wouldn't showcase their modern API's.  Offline Cache use as 
well as Bluetooth Low Energy heart rate monitors.

google maps has cached tiles...
my tracks has cached tiles...
why not merge?
why not be able to pre-cache an area before going offline?

C'mon google, make it happen! would be glad to even pay for that capability. I 
will pledge $20, maybe even more if that can happen.

The solution is "ViewRanger", which uses Bing Maps, which doesn't have the 
restrictive licensing that Google Maps does such that you are allowed to cache 
and display the map. And thus begins the role reversal of Google being the game 
changing upstart and Microsoft the short sighted mega corporation...

I'm not sure if this discussion leads to anything, since this project is 
already dead as the main page states: "We no longer update the open source 
version of My Tracks, and we will remove these sources after 1/1/15."

The main question is if there is anyone who wants to fork this project 
(hopefully on a platform that doesn't force you to create a google account and 
to give google your phone number just to write a ticket!).

I usually see where I will go later (at two levels, so I can can zoom in/out), 
and the images are cached... I can see it then, without data connection (in the 
middle of nowhere)

BTW, it is good to know that people is interested in fork this!

@66 I wondered about that, too, zooming out to cache the image.  I will try it 
too and see what it does.  Its such a shame.  I have tried many different 
tracking apps and I like My tracks the very best. Even better than ViewRanger, 
which I paid $20 for topo maps.  But I think the Google Maps with Terrain are 
the very best as far as giving you a picture of the terrain.
