Tracks not created from tower position

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Turn GPS off, turn on "use wireless networks" to get device location
2. Start recording track

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expect to see track recording, albeit inaccurately. Track does not record 
although record button is activated.

What version of MyTracks are you using? On what version of Android? On what
phone?
MyTracks 1.0.14
Android 1.5 on Sprint CDMA HTC Hero

NOTE: I am attempting to do this because: 1) I want to keep location 
information regardless of accuracy, and 2) The use of GPS on my phone is 
not an option, it kills the battery

Also, I set my options such that the inaccuracies will not cause it to not 
record, 
they're set to:

split frequency: no splitting
min time between points: 10 min
min distance between points: 328 ft
max distance between points: 3.1 mi
min accuracy: 3.1 mi
signal sampling frequency: 5 min

I'm in favor of rejecting this feature request.  We purposely did not allow 
tracking 
based on network location.  We found the error to be too large to be useful.

Why would someone want this functionality instead of turning on the GPS?

If we did do this I think we should have a very load warning that the data is 
likely 
to be crap.

All the statistics would be useless in this mode, I think it's only useful for 
very
long trips where you want rough estimates of where you went through. I'm also 
not
favorable of having this feature unless there's a big warning when you enable 
it.

I would like very rough estimates of where my device is located at given times. 
GPS 
is not an option because of battery life.

It's a completely different use for this application than what was probably 
initially intended, but letting the user have readily available options makes 
it 
useful to a larger target audience.

The warning is perfectly okay... on a sidenote, this application already 
supports "3.1 miles" of inaccuracy. That's a whole lot more than the inaccuracy 
circle I see when my GPS is off and the device is using towers for location. Is 
the 
circle not accurate when the GPS is off?

I would appreciate this too.

I have a Motorola Milestone. With GPS the battery lasts a bit more than 2 
hours. With 
just Wireless I can use it for two days. Tracking by GPS on a bike trip is 
impossible 
in the current state.

I thought this over (as mentioned on the e-mail list) - it makes sense for some 
applications like photo geotagging. Many applications, like Aperture, will load 
a GPX file, then allow you to correct the points on top of google maps - I've 
been using this with the GPS on, but obviously that's not battery-efficient.

We can always make it a specific checkbox on the preferences with a big warning 
about the data being very bad.

Sandor, what do you think?

Celltowers GPS has 2 advantages:
It works inside buildings
It consumes far less battery than true gps
So, for people who do not need high accuracy, this is a good alternative.

a simple solution:
in preferences, two checkboxes:
- one for true gps
- one for cell tower gps

so, people can chose true gps And/Or celltowers gps
The AND is important for people who want the best available signal, if true gps 
isn't available, then use celltowers gps

To avoid complaining people, set celltowers gps on disabled by default
