It sounds great, I wonder if we could expand the idea to actively involve RTT and some of the communities that will participate. Since we've in program also another workshop with Lilia, about "imagining a transfeminist digital space" - we could link the 2# workshops so that they cross the whole RTT festival period in such a way that:
1# The first day you run the Bonfire Install Party workshop - where a new bonfire instance is setup and the initial default settings are defined together with the participants (maybe also with some onboarding features that we've prepared in advance)
2# The second day we do the workshop with Lilia where we take the bonfire instance you've setup and we imagine which features / UX / behaviours need to be changed / removed / implemented in order to transform it into a digital space the RTT community feel safe to join and nurture. The output of such workshop could be a living document with some feature requests, initial Code of Conduct, etc etc.
3# The third day we preset the document to the general assembly, with the idea of doing an open call to all communities / orgs / social spaces to feed into the doc their needs and ideas - so that it becomes a kind of manifesto to follow to build the digital space such network needs - with the commitment that we then build the features as separate extensions in Bonfire
4# We host a series of workshop/hackatons through the year with RTT (or interested communties) to build and iterate the features collectively, possibly involving more participats as devs, ux designers, translators, etc etc
How can I participate remotely?
We will ask the reclaim the tech coordinators if the event will be streamed somewhere, tough it will all be done in italian - i think the easiest way to follow up on this will be to read the articles and reports that will come after the event? or I do wonder if there's interest from remote communities we may try to involve them somehow idk
I will read the reports after the event. No need to stream on my behalf.
i've discussed with Luca Recano, who is on board with the idea outlined above, he suggested us to send a proposal draft by end of this week, as next tuesday they'll have a first meeting to start planning the activities and the whole program... Ok to collaboratively draft a plan on a doc and share with RTT by friday?
@ivanminutillo ok to me, should we use some markdown here or some more structured document editor? if you use google you can share docs to me to leidigiacomo@gmail.com
our hedgedoc is currently down, i'll invite you to a google doc to start and we can move if needed
I'm opening this issue to track the work to have a Bonfire installation, customization (and maybe federation?) demo at Reclaim The Tech in May.
@mayel @ivanminutillo I'm not sure if something technical is still required, if there are some open blocking issues could you list the here? Also are you planning on giving a talk explaining Bonfire's features and vision? If you do I could give just a brief presentation of Bonfire citing your talk and Bonfire's website and campground instance.
The idea would be to give a brief introduction on Bonfire and the extensions concept, setup an instance, customize it, and maybe enable federation with campground.bonfire.cafe and demo a federation feature if it'll be stable enough. do you think I could help with some onboarding/customization features?
besides that: which installation method do you think we should demo at reclaim the tech? abra seems pretty doable but requires another machine to deploy to or is there some way to deploy to the same machine I'll use for the workshop? I could bring another computer or maybe even ask the TPO for one if they are interested to run a bonfire instance, but we never spoke about it. did you?
once the installation method is decided i think i'll start testing it on different distros, at least: ubuntu, opensuse and guix (if you have any other indication i'm really open to suggestions) and trying to fix any problem i find.
in the meanwhile I'll also try again to run a Bonfire instance at home to experiment a little with configuiration. again if you have any pointers on important features to test and demo at RTT let me know!
@chobeat if you are still interested let's keep in touch. If needed I can also setup a chat for everyone interested in collaborating.
