At the moment, all the data used to produce the CPAN.io boards comes from the BackPAN indexes, as provided by BackPAN::Index.
With the newer metrics being discussed (see #7 for example, or the ironman-like boards @neilbowers and I discussed on IRC), we need more source data (values from META fields, information already produced by sites like metacpan, ).
Some of that data takes a lot of time to aggregate, and some can be lost when not collected in time, hence the need for keeping track of it in an independent source that CPAN.io can then aggregate further.
