Coherent book and content language handling #1674

I'm frustrating with adding translated books: should I add a translation as a new book, or should I contribute to existing discussions in a different language than I'm reading and restrain myself of quoting? Yet the book is a single piece of work, worth of consolidated broad discussion.

I think book translations could be linked together somehow, allowing me to see reviews and quotes from other languages.

It would be super cool, if the comments / quotes / reviews would be encouraged in the same language as the book or it's translation is, making it accessible and relevant to the audience that can actually read the book in that language.

Equally, it would be super nice to be able to set the languages you can read (like in mastodon), and get automatic filters of the content. This way I could see the reviews of the book I read in English also by German or Italian readers. That would be super cool and culturally enriching.

As for UI, I think setting a language in your profile could also work as a filter for language selectors (like in #1035), so you wouldn't have to scroll all world's languages, but could immediately see those that you know. So most people would not have to use scrollbars.

I really like the idea of setting (potentially multiple) languages you read and that being used to filter the editions to display. The language of the edition displayed when adding a "book" is sometimes ...surprising.
