What we have on borealbirds.ca

What we should produce from the latest results

data locations

  1. a static png which is doable but not very useful
  2. a raster with 0/1 at 1 km^2 resolution.

BCR-province level density

Calculating mean density and pop size is important.

  1. An interactive map can be done but I don't see high value other than showing off.
  2. A queryable table (sort/filter) would make more sense with a static map showing where BCRs are. This can be combined with distribution map to make it species specific.
  3. static png : would anyone ever use a map of this rather than the continuous distribution/density map?
  4. vector shapefile : would anyone ever need the densities in a spatial format?

Distribution/density maps

The underlying model is the same.

  1. Static map (with BCRs and jurisdiction lines overlaid) can be shown along side the table
  2. Raster layers of continuous maps (unclear on this bit about links pointing to relevant raster layers)

Habitat associations

Based on post-stratification using Canadian land cover 2010 or North Am land cover.

  1. Static bar graphs (png) for each BCR jurisdiction unit (because sometimes people want to be able to plug an image directly into their own work).
  2. Interactive bar graphs.

Data download

All species info combined (i.e. not separate by species)

Species specific outputs

How to deal with uncertainty?

dstralberg commented 5 years ago

Data locations: Let's try to have a raster for each year (or maybe for now just the two time periods for which we have Beaudoin layers, 2001 and 2011). But I think we do need the pngs too.

Also, what about trend? Is it worth calculating residual trend based on just two time periods? (<=2005, >2005)

Otherwise it all looks good to me.

psolymos commented 5 years ago

We can revisit trend later.

We can have yearly or period specific rasters, but is there a use case for this data product? Would an overall raster with region/year breakdown table work equally well? I just don't want to blow up the size of the downloadable files unnecessarily.

OK, pngs are no big deal. Do we need branding for those pics? I guess it should be fine with magick.

Are we talking about this in a general sense or are we envisioning a specific platform for serving these products?

I ask because we've considered a few options:

  1. GeoNetwork was our latest decision but it's on hold until Melina is back from parental leave
  2. Erin has suggested we join forces with ABMI and replicate their biodiversity browser for our national products
  3. Peter could custom-build something specific for GNN products as an interim solution

It would be good to join forces with ABMI, but my understanding is that they have a consultant doing all of the mapping portal work. So do we have funding for that?

But I think most important is to make data products available fairly rapidly. I think we should continue developing GeoNetwork and get someone else to fill in for Melina while she is on leave.

There is some funding in Erin's open data G&C to develop a prototype portal with ABMI by March 31. That's the second part of today's meeting.

Unfortunately we don't have anyone around to continue GeoNetwork while Melina is on leave.
