Refactor/react 17 update #405

Proposed changes:

Update React to the latest version (17.0.2) as React 17 enables gradual updates and that could be useful for users.
Updating React also required changing to a different Enzyme adapter. With that all tests pass.

[ ] added some tests for the functionality
[ ] updated the documentation
[ ] updated the changelog
