Can't initalize Bottles due to encoding issue #2659

The window gets stuck in the intialization process

I fear that I messed up my system somehow rather than being an issue in Bottles, but I figured it was better to ask

Having same issue on Nobara with the language set to english on both fedora and flatpak packages.

Changing the locale to en_US.utf8 fixes the issue.

seems like this issue is same as #2017

Maybe a regression or previous bugfix doesn't actually fix the bug.

@quazar-omega @Okirshen Can you also run python -c "import sys; print(sys.stdout.encoding)"? I think the result should be latin-1 or iso88591

if so, a temporary self-fix workaround can be set your LC_CTYPE to the utf8 suffix version which means:

This workaround will affect other programs on your system and may break some old program which cannot handle encoding correctly

but I still recommend you to use utf8 all the time because it gives you better compatibility

How would I go about setting those environment variables like that, do I just put those in the .bashrc or is there a better way that may integrate better with the system?

set it system-wide: Run localectl set-locale LANG=it_IT.utf-8

And stop kde to override it: Run rm ~/.config/plasma-localerc or rm ~/.config/plasma-locale-settings.sh for old version

a proper fix will included in next release, to provide better compatibility to systems which is still using legacy encodings.

EDIT: the command that worked for me was

sudo localectl set-locale LANG=it_IT.UTF-8
