i noticed that some apps use man_MANS and others use dist_man_MANS (and the latter do not add the mangpages to CLEANFILES).
I guess the idea was to add the manpages to the repository (but why only for a few apps?) and only re-generate them on demand, or similar.
i haven't change this behavior (though i think it should be consistent between all apps)
