Suport DNS names in the cluster configuration file #540

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 8 years ago

It would be nice if we could use DNS names in the cluster configuration file.
That would make things a little bit less brittle, when IP addresses change (not
that that happens very often ...).

This was brought up in one of our earlier status meetings.
I am concerned about the case when a machine is multi-homed and we leave it
upon the DNS being correctly configured to resolve it to the right IP address.
Having an explicit IP address IMO, makes it really explicit giving control in
hands of Managix as against relying on correct management of external DNS
configuration.

thoughts?

I agree that it's more explicit, but it's also more painful as most people
usually deal with DNS names and not with IP addresses. E.g. when I'm setting up
Oracle, I never see an IP address - all of that is delegated to the DNS service.
So I think that it would be nice to be able to give a DNS name without losing
the ability to provide an IP address if "surprises" happen. But it's clearly
not the most urgent thing :)

This is being implemented as a resolution to issue 747 and other issues of the
same character.
