Model and Motherboard revisions\working or not working #28

Hello, I just wanted to share my findings with the SCPH-5501 model. I cannot find any reason why some of the PU-18 1-664-537-52 boards will not work with the exploit (Good candidates for an ODE!). They all have the following BIOS CRC-32 8d8cb7e4 BIOS Version: 3.0 Date 11/18/96. I would like others to share their findings, model, board revision, manufacture date on the bottom of the console, is the exploit working or not working, and BIOS version. Try to provide as much information as possible.

These are all NTSC SCPH-5501 models.

PU-18\1-664-537-62\September 1997\PSIO switchboard installed\exploit is working PU-18\1-664-537-52\September 1997\no mods\exploit is not working PU-18\1-664-537-52\September 1997\no mods\exploit is not working PU-18\1-664-537-72\March 1998\no mods\exploit is working PU-18\1-664-537-72\March 1998\no mods\exploit is working PU-18\1-664-537-52\December 1997\no mods\exploit is working PU-18\1-664-537-52\June 1997\XStation installed\exploit is working

Hi!, i have a SCPH-5501 with a 1-664-537-52 on the board and with September 1997 on the manufacturing date too that doesn't boot onto Unirom. So you know that you aren't the only one ^^.

What a coincidence. I have a 52 revision too of a 5501. It's a motherboard that I bought on eBay from the US. Gonna plug it inside the PAL shell and try. Wait... I suppose there is no way to know the manufacturer date from the motherboard... Since I don't have its original plastic shell with the label...

I can boot into Unirom with a modified action replay. But I don't think you can see the manufacturer date. Is that embedded into the console bios as well?? The bios date is a thing but what about the production date?

hurda commented 3 years ago

Might be a coincidence, but there's a (closed unsolved) issue-ticket for in the xstation-repo for the xstation-install not working with a -52 but with several -62 boards. https://github.com/x-station/xstation-issues/issues/12

"Once An Accident, Twice A Coincidence, Three Times ..."

In the service-manual for 5500-boards, -52 and -62 use the same pcb-schematic and also regarding installed parts they look to be the same. Weird.

Ichisuke83 commented 3 years ago

So I have 2 PU-18 boards. A PAL one that is inside its own shell, 5502 model (BIOS is 3.0 - 1st Jan '97) and it's a -52 rev. board too. The exploit won't fully trigger, As soon as I select the memory card icon (this model has the old style menu), the icon light up, changing to black and returning to its normal color like it's going into the memory card manager but instead it just stay on that screen, frozen. I don't know the manufacturer date since on the PAL model labels they didn't write the date back then... The only date I have is the internal one on the plastic lid written in black: "7 092906" (don't know if that's 7 is part of the date). There is also the "mold date" inside but I don't have a clue on how to read that either....

The NTSC -52 rev. board (BIOS is the usual 3.0 dated 11st Nov. '96) behave in the same manner, exploit is not triggered. The write "memory card" (here there is the colored menu) flashes and then nothing.

For doing this tests I've used the same memory card that was working fine in launching the exploit with 2 PSOne.

ramapcsx2 commented 3 years ago

@hurda The xStation issue is still open, but I can guarantee you that the -52 revision works with the ode. The hardware is completely the same. The various PU-18 subrevisions changed a few resistors and capacitors around, and modified the trace layout a little. Nothing that truly affects anything.

The software (BIOS) side might differ, but this would also not cause a problem for xStation. It might for the exploit though.

kubik369 commented 3 years ago

I can confirm that with the new version (20210419), my SCPH-5502 (PU-18, -62) seems to be working flawlessly, my SCPH-102 worked flawlessly even with the previous version.

Try the new version, I wasn't able to boot my 5502 even a single time in 4 days, so you might have the same "problem".

// EDIT: Just to specify, I was having the same symptoms as described by Ichisuke and his 5502.

whitezombie2000 commented 3 years ago

That's awesome! I will give the 20210419 update a try!

EDIT: The 2 problematic -52 boards are working just fine with this update!

Glazeddberrie commented 3 years ago

Awesome, i'm thinking on a way to recover my memory cards because i don't have a Arduino or a NTSC-U Game to clean them, idk if i some one could help me with this.

Get PSX Hacker Kit 18 in 1, burn it, you need a way to boot it on the PS1 (might work on a PS2 but didn't try it), and use Memory Card Manager to format it.

Glazeddberrie commented 3 years ago

Oh, thank you for the help! I right now bought a new psx memory card, it should arrive in some days from now, when it arrives i will format the other memory cards with the PSX Hacker Kit you mentioned. Thank You very much!!

Ichisuke83 commented 3 years ago

Probably also this one works, didn't test it myself yet. https://reachcoding.eu/psx-memory-card-formatter Anyway keep in mind to remove the memory card before loading any of these programs since they'll just crash.

I gave it a try, works great as well for formatting, just like Memory Card Manager in the PSX Hacker Kit 18 in 1.

Did you use the 20210419 images on the front page? The 1.0 releases still have the older 20210414 images.

I tried 20210419 versions of 3.0 BIOS. 3.0 (1996-11-18) - hangs after MC menu 3.0 (1997-01-06) - nothing happened, MC menu opens in normal mode

also I tried 4.1 (1997-12-16) on same MC for SCPH-7502 with modchip and works perfectly

Looks like the front page added a 20210420 update for the 5500. Give it a try.

Yes it works! But it can't play PAL or US backups, just giving error.

That's because it's a Japanese model. There's a second regional check on Japanese models (if I remember correctly only the very first 1000 models doesn't have that) that cannot be bypassed with Unirom.

Edit: you should solve this by burning the import player (Japanese version) and than booting the games. But I don't know if this check is performed again after a game(import player in this case) is loaded or not.... Otherwise you have to patch to Japanese region the games....

Yeah, Japanese Consoles after 1000 or 3000 if im not wrong have some extra protection on them so you can only play NTSC-J games, you still can play backups on a burned disc but only NTSC-J games. I struggled so much to buy an American PSX (the one i have rn) in my country because EVERYONE WAS SELLING JAPANESE CONSOLES but finally being patient worked very well.

Edit: Im not sure if you can bypass this with ImportPlayer but im pretty sure that you can since ImportPlayer already passed the Region Code being readed. You could try burning a NTSC-J version of ImportPlayer and give it a try.

Too bad. I recently read about Japan PS1 I was hoping to solve the problem with UniRom. In my country NTSC-J is exotica on the contrary. You can easily find PAL and 99% it will be with modchip.
