Perhaps best to ask at Doomworld / Twitter / Mastodon etc. where you can get a broader range of answers. I find DOOM Retro a bit 'heavy handed' with special effects compared to other ports but looking at the cvars, most of these effects can be toned down to the player's desired level although a proper Accessibility or Graphics menu would make this more immediately discoverable.
