Preview sometimes empty #1

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open a PEF document
2. Click preview
3. Click on a volume

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected: The contents of the volume
Observed: An empty page (zero byte)

This may be due to a threaded use of a transformer factory instance (now 
removed). The issue might be resolved, however there is no way of knowing.
