[Feature] Improved 3D meshes (smoothing, normals, etc) #214

Open dbirman opened 8 months ago

dbirman commented 8 months ago

Right now the 3D mesh files for a lot of the atlases are provided by the uploader, and have a lot variability in quality across the different atlases. Building the 3D meshes from the annotations in a consistent pipeline across atlases would allow for better smoothing of mesh surfaces and fixing various bugs (like inverted normals).

Related to https://github.com/brainglobe/brainglobe-atlasapi/issues/240 (discussion of issues w/ normals in the CCF)

Thanks raising this @dbirman. I'm moving this issue to the atlas generation repo to track better.

Also, most people can't see the slack discussion, so we should discuss this in the open here in case anyone has any other ideas. cc @Quorumetrix.

@alessandrofelder this is probably a good example of why we should move the dev discussions to an open platform like Zulip.
