good question! It's shorthand for eating your own dogfood.

It's more often used in the sense of internally using a new product, but it's fairly common to use it at the level of individual code features as well.

Especially with bigger changes, creating a new tool and integrating it into existing code in one go can get complicated fast, so it's often helpful for reviewers if you build the tool in one pass, and then start to make practical use of it in a later pass(es).

Interesting - I hadn't heard of that term before. It certainly makes sense to test any changes internally first though, so I understand the underlying motivations.
