[Desktop] Save Tabs as Workspace #11096

Open saberistic opened 4 years ago

saberistic commented 4 years ago

Description

This is mostly a product suggestion. A functionality that allows user to save state of browser window as a workspace and then open later to restore tabs etc. This is something personally I would use a lot. I am using same approach for coding in VSCode. One can imagine would be useful for all sort of tasks and flows on browser. We could even sync workspaces across devices.

Expected result:

Menu -> File -> Save tabs as workspace Menu -> File -> Open workspace ...

Maybe you already have a workaround you're using and would simply like to see this feature natively integrated - but if you want an immediate (and quite elegant) fix, I'd recommend looking at the SessionBuddy extension. SessionBuddy is legit insofar as it's in the Chrome Webstore or whatever it's called (for whatever that's worth, plenty of malware in there), but my experience with it has been fantastic and judging by its' plentiful positive reviews, it seems to be well liked all around. You can save and name entire windows you have open, and easily reopen them later. Oh, and it's free.

I've found workona great for this scenario. It makes switching between workspaces very easy.

Actually that Workona looks way better! Going to have to give that a try!

@amirsaber Bookmark all tabs and use of Bookmark folders to open them again is a way to do this. I know the terminology is different with what you're suggesting and could increase usage if relabelled that way.

I'm currently using this extension:
https://morikko.github.io/synctabgroups/ but it's not maintained anymore, and has some bugs, plus it has some limitations due to the extensions api. it could be much better if these features are implemented with native code

I am writing to request the reopening of the issue titled "Workspaces like Opera #22017" in order to address two distinct improvements that would greatly enhance the system's functionality.

Firstly, I would like to emphasize that issue #22017 aims to introduce a feature similar to the workspaces available in Opera and Vivaldi browsers. This particular functionality has proven to be incredibly beneficial for improving productivity. By implementing workspaces, users can organize their tasks and projects into separate workspaces, allowing for efficient multitasking and easy navigation between different contexts. Therefore, I kindly request the reopening of issue #22017 to explore the possibilities of incorporating this valuable feature into Brave.

In addition to the aforementioned request, I would also like to highlight issue #11096, which seeks to introduce a "Save Session" functionality that is currently available in the Vivaldi browser. This feature enables users to save their current browsing session, including all open tabs, for later retrieval. By incorporating this capability into our system, users will have the ability to store and resume their work seamlessly, even across different sessions or device restarts. This enhancement would significantly enhance the user experience and productivity.

To summarize, I kindly request that both these implementations be considered. I recommend reopening the issue #22017 as a starting point, as it addresses the creation of workspaces similar to those in Opera and Vivaldi. Additionally, I urge you to explore the possibilities of incorporating the "Save Session" functionality as described in issue #11096. I believe that these enhancements will greatly contribute to the overall usability and productivity of Brave.

Thank you for your attention to this matter!

I'm full in for Workspaces. Now that Arc is also on Windows I realized how nice it is to separate my browser environments / tab environments without the need of having a complete additional browser up and running.

I like how Vivaldi does it:

In addition I'd love if different workspaces could have different profiles assigned to them

I'm full in for Workspaces. Now that Arc is also on Windows I realized how nice it is to separate my browser environments / tab environments without the need of having a complete additional browser up and running.

I like how Vivaldi does it:

  • Next to the tabs in the upper left corner is a button that opens a dropdown
  • The dropdown shows all created workspaces and the amount of tabs in them
  • On click it switches the tabs

In addition I'd love if different workspaces could have different profiles assigned to them

  • Work Tabgroup => Work Profile
  • Private Tabgroup => Private Profile

I agree, in Vivaldi you can even add custom buttons with quick commands attached to them that you can configure to take you to a specific workspace. Without having to click on the workspace dropdown button.
