Suggestion: Tabs on bottom setting #181

Open srirambv opened 6 years ago

srirambv commented 6 years ago

Description

Would be nice to have bottom tabs in the upcoming directly Chromium based Brave browser as alternative setting. Means: Tabs below the url/address bar

Issue reported on browser-laptop https://github.com/brave/browser-laptop/issues/14038

Sa-Ja-Di commented 6 years ago

I know you said you do not want to change big-time the way the Chromium UI works, but as you had your coded UI, you have been open to customization suggestions.

Would be therefor nice if you would rethink your position now of a more static UI, as people are still heavily interested in customizing the browser UI.

Thanks!

Was evaluating Brave as an alternative to Chrome because of its terrible macOS integration. Sad to see that the new version defers to Chrome's UX design, which again does not integrate well on macOS.

knightshousegames commented 5 years ago

The whole reason I liked Brave was because it was the only browser I could find that didn't look like Chrome.

I want my tabs on bottom, why is that so hard!?

Sa-Ja-Di commented 5 years ago

Any news about that perhaps?

Anything ever happen with this ? Just downloaded Brave and won't use it unless tabs below is an option. I use Waterfox because of this.

Guess Brave has decided to exclude power users and stay a simple only users browser with them abandoning their old custom UI. Quite sad.

bsclifton commented 5 years ago

@Sa-Ja-Di this is definitely something we would like to do at some point - I know I personally preferred the way it was in the older Brave browser

However, editing the interface can be difficult because we need to be careful about how the change is made (so that it doesn't conflict with Chromium, when we pull in newer code).

cc: @rebron for prioritization

Naatan commented 5 years ago

With due respect, how do you expect to differentiate yourself if you also expect your code to always be "compatible" with chromium? It seems like every Chromium based browser falls into this trap, except Vivaldi which seems to just make a conscious decision to still defer to the Chrome blueprint.

I get that part of it is that you don't want to upset users who are used to a certain UX, but it frustrates me that none of the chromium forks out there is truly trying to differentiate themselves in the area of UX. I find the Chrome UX to be terrible and would love to see one of these forks try to improve on it.

bsclifton commented 5 years ago

@Naatan we do want to differentiate- but sometimes it take a while to come up with a process to make the change easy to maintain

For example, the settings pages we've recently redone. Maintaining these is quite easy because we took the time to do it properly (in the code). You will continue to see these become more "Brave-like". The same time needs to be set aside for situations like this (creating the proper abstraction in code, etc) to ensure the result is maintainable for the long term

Tharadun commented 4 years ago

This is the only thing keeping me using Waterfox over Brave, I can't stand tabs on top.

NotepadPlusUser commented 4 years ago

I am very supportive of this browser, because I am appalled at the tracking and lack of privacy that is so comon on the web.

I am, however, very much attached to tabs on the bottom, and I add my voice to those asking for it to be added as an option.

jrbray1 commented 4 years ago

Tabs on bottom is clearly a religious debate, but given opinion is strong, it seems wise to offer the option. I've spend ages battling Firefox to get it, I was hope Brave would be easy.

Rgyver2 commented 4 years ago

I also would have liked to support Brave. But Tabs on bottom is a MUST and a deal breaker for me. I posted several questions and created a brave account just to find the answer on how to put Tabs on bottom. after 6 weeks i got zero response! Just completely ignored. I since closed my brave account and uninstalled brave from my computer. Even if they responded just to say, sorry but we are not entertaining that option right now, would have said something. i have googled Brave+tabs+bottom for the three months following the closing of my account - and still nothing new. I have not even installed Brave on my phone (were tap position doesn't matter) due to the lack of response on this request. I just COMPLETELY gave up on Brave.

Maybe someone need to start a go fund me page for "Brave taps on bottom". They get they money only if they create the option. If not, uninstall and don't look back.

i have since installed Palemoon, and use it on occasion. My modified Firefox (tabs on bottom) is my main browser. I have even installed Tor browser and modified it to have taps on bottom using the same (stylesheet) method as i did in Firefox.

Brave - Why do you ignore and abandon this large community that likes (and demands) their browser to work in a way that is pleasing and makes sense for us?

snintendog commented 4 years ago

Given how Brave still doesnt want to do this STILL it only shows how alike they are to google.

rpgmaniac commented 3 years ago

Are you planning to implement this option yes or no? can we have a clear answer plz? there is people who would like to know in order to decide if they are gonna keep the browser or not, this is a MUST feature for a lot of people out there I hope you get how important this issue is, so ye plz give us a clear answer & we would also like to know how long is gonna take to see this option in Brave.

bsclifton commented 3 years ago

Unfortunately, we have no plans at the moment to implement this- I've marked as P5 to accurately reflect that ☹️

Priorities can change - we are exploring a sidebar feature right now (you can preview at https://github.com/brave/brave-core/pull/7325). As we get into more C++ UI changes (further customizing Chromium), the priority of this feature request may change and become easier to implement 😄

In the meantime, thumbs up and comments/feedback are extremely welcomed. This would be a great feature - the old version of Brave ("Muon") had this and I preferred it. However, there are a lot of open issues on our backlog (over 2.8k at the moment) some requiring more immediate attention and we only have a limited set of developers ☹️

TokenRing commented 1 year ago

if thumbs up from users such as ourselves get this issue more recognition, then so be it. I guess I can't blame you for not focusing on it since it gets so few people (but we are zealous about it) giving it the thumbs up.

Tabs/AddressBar invisible or placed on bottom is a great feature for me. I like brave a lot, but these days I'm trying Vivaldi these days and it satisfies me more.

txtyash commented 1 year ago

This would be a great feature as it also works like bottom padding for input boxes on websites like discord so I don't have to keep staring at the extreme bottom of my laptop screen. It helps with neck pain. And it works like a charm if I'm using my laptop while lying down.

motrengaw commented 1 year ago

Why would you spend time and energy on adding an entirely new feature like vertical tabs before addressing the myriad requests to return the "tabs below" feature that a sizable portion of your user base have been desperately requesting over years?? Is there some "religious" prohibition against having a tab bar below the address bar in the design community? Brave is not the only offender here, it seems that most of the other major browser teams have studiously neglected or removed this very popular feature, and done so in the face of significant resistance by their user community.

Regardless of current GUI design fashion, it is both mystifying and deeply annoying that this basic layout preference is so completely dismissed by the engineering community.

If you won't address this as a priority at least give us a good reason why you won't. And please don't quote the maintenance queue as an excuse; you found time to roll out vertical tabs somehow.

snintendog commented 1 year ago

You have Vtabs there is no Reason to allow us to have our own CSS now. we will do instead. Just Open up the UI for us to touch or drop CHROMIUM.

msadeqhe commented 11 months ago

I use Brave in GNOME. Really it’s a necessary feature to have tabs below address bar.

Therefore its look would be similar to GNOME apps such as:

I wonder the same too, I am glad I found that I am not the only one wonder how come there is a vertical tabs option but not a horizontal tabs below URL/bookmark bars option.

I would like to tabs on the bottom - I mean the actual bottom of the browser. Thanks

I am Coming from Avant browser myself, and i am strangling the last life out of it but this is one of my biggest requirements for my new browser to be. "actual bottom of the browser" Its the reason why brave is not my default browser yet. image

TokenRing commented 5 months ago

@HellPhantom and @daylight54 - since you two are actually asking about something completely different than what the original issue request is talking about, quote:

"Would be nice to have bottom tabs in the upcoming directly Chromium based Brave browser as alternative setting. Means: Tabs below the url/address bar"

I would suggest opening up a separate issue to ask about that.
