Option to open download after completion #2153

Open srirambv opened 5 years ago

srirambv commented 5 years ago

Description

From Community https://community.brave.com/t/download-functionality-request/37431

When I download a document, i’m only given a save option not an open or save option as experience with other browsers. Often preview is not necessarily appropriate

image

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Download a file
  2. Doesn't show an option to open instantly after download is completed. User has to click file which is being downloaded to trigger open

Brave version (brave://version info)

All

Additional Information

personal +1 on this as well

thutex commented 5 years ago

i actually came from a firefox/chrome combination to brave... but this issue is killing me. i see it was originally requested in 2016 (give user the choice to open or save, and if open save it to a temp directory, open it, and remove the file after use)... right now my download folder is getting filled with all kinds of crap that i only need to quickly browse through and it is bothering me enough to make me consider switching back to firefox/chrome combo...

Would be a great feature to add to Brave, but as a workaround: create a scheduled batch file to run daily to delete everything >1 day old from the Downloads folder (or other subfolder designated for Brave to store downloaded files.)

thutex commented 4 years ago

not eerything in my downloads folder, however, should be deleted. so that workaround is a no go. however, i switched over to opera with a backup of firefox since this basic issue is not being looked at so for me it's no longer an issue.

how is that not an option yet? such a simple functionality

zhhaa commented 4 years ago

edge legacy and firefox had this same feature and when edge chromium was released, it was missing. After numerous requests from users, edge chromium has incorporated it back and it will be coming to stable channel in coming weeks. I dearly want brave to adopt the feature. Even if it takes time, I will definitely wait. The temp download option is very useful feature, especially if you use whatsapp web, it helps you view the numerous photos, videos and documents posted in the groups without cluttering your main downloads folder.

forgive if I crossed any thread rules, just a humble request from a long time fan.

+1 my downloads folder is always filled with small documents I need to quickly view for work. Please add the ability to choose to open the document instead of downloading.

+1 at 2021. This is more like a must-have feature.

+1, honestly astonished that this feature is still missing. Need it quite badly for stuff like citrix receiver.

Meth0d007 commented 3 years ago

+1 Honestly this is a basic Browser feature, how can this almost 3 years later still be open ?! Makes me question if we will ever be able to rollout Brave in an enterprise environment.

this basic feature made me quit chrome and is a no-go for brave.

clementgonin commented 3 years ago

+1... I can't understand how this BASIC feature is still missing after 3 YEARS OF TICKETS wtf..... Think I'll go back to Firefox then, they're doing crap recently, but at least have an "open" button... :/

They actually don't listen to the community

+1 Without this basic feature, brave is not an option for me

fharper commented 2 years ago

Would love to see this feature implemented also.

Martuv93 commented 2 years ago

This seems like a rather highly requested feature so it's strange that they haven't added it yet. Doesn't seem like it should be a big deal to implement either. I often work and download temporary files, such as the Citrix .ica files and various log files, and it's a pain in the ass to have to click download, open the file, and then delete the file afterward. It makes what should be a one-click operation into a ~4 click one which might not sound like a lot, but when you have to do it multiple times a day the frustration adds up.

+2 Please !?!

loganbrunner commented 2 years ago

+1 Quite annoying when using remote desktop with my organization and with Brave I have to download the .rdp file - my Downloads folder is spammed with these .rdp files which doesn't happen with the default Edge.

brunolpsousa commented 2 years ago

Since Firefox is basically deprecating this feature as of v98, Brave would be a great alternative should this feature gets implemented.

victorviana3 commented 2 years ago

Microsoft edge got me with this feature

Does this feature require chromium changes or is it something that can be done on brave?

Far out, 2022 and still no option for brave to open files instead of just downloading them!!! if this is a "security" thing, it should be the users "choice". brave is based on chrome. Chrome has had this option for a decade or more.

basic functionality in every other browser.

MrDananas commented 1 year ago

This is actually crazy. Just recently we got vertical tabs and that's still in development. I was so close to switching back to Edge then and really close now. It's such a basic feature but so nice. Especially for those whose work constantly requires downloading temporary files. Please implement this.

it's 2023 and this issue still bothering most of the new users. It doesnt make sense to keep downloading crap stuff that we only need to check for noce

petersjoo commented 9 months ago

Did not expect to end up in a 5 y/o issue when I searched for a solution to this annoyance 😕

skewty commented 6 months ago

Perhaps it's time for a fork. The brave lion seems timid to me.. Being that it is scared of downloads, I'd hardly call it brave.

k4waiiiii commented 3 months ago

it's already 2024 and nothing has changed?

simonhong commented 3 months ago

We have some convenient menu entry for opening. Click Open when done -> will open after completion Click Always open files of this types -> This menu is enabled for safe files types.(it seems exe file is not allowed now) image

That's fine if the file is large, but what we need is to open temporary files so that when I turn off or restart my device it will be deleted, for example a document file or an image. I and maybe several other people work quite a lot with these files, so we need this feature.

manfromarce commented 3 months ago

Edge and Firefox have settings to always save (which is the behavior of Chromium and Brave), or to always prompt to open or save when the download starts. In this case if Open is clicked the file is actually saved in the temp folder. Having this feature in Brave would be a very welcome (Edge is also Chromium-based, so it can be implemented).
