Feature request: Setting to hide the tab bar #7966

Open MinmoTech opened 4 years ago

MinmoTech commented 4 years ago

Description

In the Vivaldi browser you are able to hide your tab bar with a setting (though you can still navigate through tabs with <ctrl+tab>). (Similar issue: hiding the address bar)

I would love for this to be possible in brave as well!

Steps to Reproduce

Go to Settings -> Appearance

Actual result:

No setting for hiding the tab bar.

Expected result:

We can keep this issue open but this is a setting that we likely won't implement.

MinmoTech commented 4 years ago

@rebron Would you accept a pull request if I would make this?

rebron commented 4 years ago

We love contributions. This does feel more like a candidate as an extension though or at least tested out as an extension first, which was how the whole of tabbed browsing was first introduced into the browser.

I understand that we have a fair amount of users and potential users who want max pixel real estate and full control of browser ui, that's what extensions are for and we do have some user preferences for hiding/sharing some browser buttons and other elements, full screen etc.

It's an advanced user setting and we would need to consider where to put this setting as well as other UE issues in the hidden tab bar state.

If it's a feature that we'd want on by default or a feature we'd encourage people to opt-in to, it's going to be hard to justify building it out.

Would love to have this implemented. Chrome does this when fullscreening on MacOS and is quite useful.

I want this for my tiled window setup.

andrei-pavel commented 3 years ago

There is no extension that does this currently.

@juligreen I think that's a yes on the pull request if you would be kind enough to provide it. Seems an easy task.

I'm back to Firefox until then...

Here's an additional reason to do this: some of us don't use tabbed browsing at all, and we use tiling window-managers on Windows. The tab bar is a visual nuisance then. What follows is a picture of what that looks like.

Another use for this is people with learning issues. I was helping an elderly person use the browser and she just couldn't remember where to type in her website. She kept mousing over the tab area. I realized she was far from using tabs as a feature. So if I could remove that, it may be less confusing for her.

Also looking for this feature!

Please add this feature!

i3wm user here. I want my tabs managed by the window manager, not in the browser.

In this way, I can have tabs with text editors, websites, email, music player, another website... etc.

same here, wm user

please add. that one lingering tab and an entire bar of wasted space is just ugly

Would love to see that option too.

Not a complete solution but for others looking here to use the above feature for video sources you can install "Floating Video Player" extension.
