Found the STR for this.

  1. Enable Sync
  2. Select I have existing code
  3. Enter the secret code
  4. Disconnect from net while the sync setup is in progress (before the name and details show up
  5. Shows connection failed try again
  6. Click on the Try again button shows with Credential Server Response 400 message

Easier STR : Use the latest 0.18.x builds. With a clean profile, try to enable sync.

I have dual boot Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS and Windows 10.

The time on Windows was UTC time, while the Linux time was the local time (while actually the hardware time was UTC, set by Linux). After making Linux use local time (the simplest option described here with entering the following command in the terminal and rebooting Windows, the time was correct, and Brave was automatically synced, although the device name did not show on my laptop (instead it showed the device name as registered on Linux Brave). timedatectl set-local-rtc 1

I am having the exact same issue on a newer release:

Did you search for similar issues before submitting this one? Yes

Describe the issue you encountered: Credential Server Response 400 error while enabling sync reported by user on community https://community.brave.com/t/i-cant-turn-on-brave-sync/3242/

Platform (Win7, 8, 10? macOS? Linux distro?): Windows 10

Brave Version (revision SHA): Brave: 0.18.23 rev: 36ae2ec Muon: 4.3.10

Steps to reproduce:

Enable sync on a new profile Shows Credential server response 400

Any related issues: I notice jamesray1's comment about time zones. I am in Arizona which doesn't participate in DST; not sure if this is an issue since my BIOS and and Windows time are on local time, but I figure it may have a role.

I have also tried reinstalling from scratch after the "nuclear option" of deleting all data from users\appdata\Local and \Roaming

I had the idea to try enabling Sync on my Windows machine and then using those code words on my Mac (reversing the direction of primary/secondary devices) but I got the same error message when I tried to create new words on the Windows machine.

As per #175, after encountering this issue I manually synced date/time on my Windows laptop (which was 14 minutes ahead of real time). After the date/time was correct, retrying Sync worked perfectly and now my device is syncing data.
