I have added a brand new template using the memoir document type rather than beamer. For now this has given me more control over what I would like to see in regards to avoiding the issue of beamer blocks and getting those from an R Markdown script. With this method you can write an R Markdown document in the same way you know and love and get the appropriate poster.
