HardwareGrowler » Time Machine Notifications #483

Given HwG's system-encompassing nature, it makes sense to have Time Machine
notifications in there as well.

Peter Hosey already made a small utility that does this, with code available:

We can talk to Peter about using his Time Machine Growler
(https://bitbucket.org/boredzo/time-machine-growler/overview) for the basis of
a new module for HWGrowl 2.0. It relies on ASL, and there are a couple
problems with that, first is its fragile, if apple at some point changes what
gets logged when time machine starts/finishes, it will break. Second is that
ASL relies on a temp exception entitlement for the log file.

10.7 added the command line utility tmutil, but it won't let us check if a
backup is currently happening, only that one has happened.

For now, this is being dropped from HWGrowler 2.0 due to the cpu usage issue.
Flagging for now as won't fix, since apple neither provides a way to get at
this info directly, or an efficient way to ask the log for it. Its a nice
idea, and we might revisit in the future.
