Do not make rar releases. #737

Use zip instead. RAR is a proprietary format and is not available on OS X without installing 3rd party applications.

soshimozi commented 8 years ago

This is a windows application and won't run on OS X anyway without Wine or a VM which isn't running OSX. This is a PE x86 executable and as such will never run on native OS X.

ahmetb commented 8 years ago

Fair point. I didn't realize earlier. But WinRAR is proprietary software and Windows has support for the open ZIP format. I suggest doing ZIP anyway.

using rar gives better packaging, and keeps the real nubs away ;-) #rar scene style ;-)

soshimozi commented 8 years ago

@ahmetalpbalkan You bring up a great point though. Since we are using an open source platform to host the projects we should embrace as much open standards as possible. Though that's a bit antithetic when you think about it since this project is all about reverse engineering a proprietary system :)

ahmetb commented 8 years ago

@soshimozi I think ZIP is very standard whereas RAR is long dead. This is not about open source or freedom. :) It's like shipping TIFF images when there's PNG/JPEG available.

dutch2005 commented 8 years ago

@ahmetalpbalkan I think that realy depends on where your looking almost anything you'd download form a torrent site and/or usenet is rar..

Most sweetest would be a update feature in the program itself, updating automatically by downloading the latest files(and overwriting the old files...)

@ahmetalpbalkan If it's not about open source then why did you mention proprietary in your first missive? You sound confused my friend. You are complaining about packaging - serious. If it's that hard for you download the source and compile it locally. That way you don't have to worry about WinRAR or whatever.
