The huge image should actually a smaller image when the width of the screen is smaller (e.g. responsive using a mediaquery -- I think bootstrap which I'm using for the site has examples of this in their docs).
I was thinking of using cloudinary for scaling the image -- we used the service at Blazing Cloud and it got rave reviews from developers and is free for small usage: https://cloudinary.com/users/register/free
