proactively fix upcoming lint errors #1807

Go 1.18 is around the corner and of particular interest to us because it contains supper for generics.

Adopting 1.18 will eventually require us to upgrade golangci-lint.

This PR proactively fixes issue that the forcetypeassert linter will being complaining about after that upgrade.

This PR contains no functional changes and only touches test code.
