Nada, I had a humble idea about that task:

you can use try and catch... search for the user.. if there is an exception (no 
user).. handle it in the catch. and return -1

i already wrote the method to test it and i'm deploying now .. if it didn't 
work i'll try your idea

Done .. If the registering user is already registered in our database .. an 
alert will be shown with an OK button, when clicked, the user will be directed 
to the home page
