Future photo solution #37

First, I think this site design is pure brilliance. Thanks for sharing it with the world!

Now a question.. with Google further disabling Picasa’s API, most recently new album creation, they appear to have rendering public albums impossible to create. Any idea what your solution will be for photos moving forward?

I've been creating albums in Google Photos and they seem to come through the same API. Is that not working for you?

I appreciate the reply and am glad to hear that you continue to have success with Google Photos! I have not but could certainly me missing something obvious.. It is my understanding that all displayed albums are flagged as public. Through early March I had been accomplishing this by uploading via Picasa desktop software and marking all new albums as “public.” This solution is no longer an option as album creation has recently been removed from the API. When I create a new album directly in Google Photos, it appears on the https://get.google.com/albumarchive/user page (only when logged in) but does not appear on the website. I have been assuming this is the case because the albums themselves are not marked as public.

The Event Gallery Tool confirms that all albums marked ‘public’ are visible on the website while all marked ‘protected’ are not. What am I missing? Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't tried in a few months, so perhaps this is changed, but IIRC, you used to be able to use the Picasa app to upload albums and mark them as public.

We’re on the same page. Unfortunately, that functionality disappeared about a month ago with Google’s most recent change to the Picasa API. It’s been a long time coming but is nonetheless disappointing that they have chosen to cripple what was once a fairly robust API.

Ah, I gotcha. That's a bummer.

I have some photos I've been meaning to upload, so I'll mess around with it this weekend and see what I can find. If Google Photos / Picasa no longer works, I'll have to figure out some alternative. Perhaps I'll write a script to move my pictures into an S3 bucket...

I see you have replaced Picasa API with a link to Google Photos Archive. Are you able to create a new album in Google Photos and make it publicly visible via the Google Photos Archive link?

I have not created a new album in a while. Simply too busy with other stuff. My plan is still to move my photos to something like S3, but that'll have to wait until I have some time off 😄
