Our plan is to do at least some quick-n-dirty work in this area for the "Data MVP0" milestone (@mccanne was quoted as saying he'd like to "spend an hour on it"... hitting #2133 for sure, and probably #2221), with the expectation that there will be more we'll get later. The issues linked to this Epic are marked for the MVP0 milestone so we'll have to confront whether or not they make that cut, with the understanding that we'll decide to let some roll to MVP1 or beyond.

Relevant work is underway on the scopes branch. Requirements have evolved a bit and the "select()" expression is now gone...
