Installing ubuntu with a bootable USB did not work for me and led to many issues. Here I explain what I did and the alternative solution I found on the discussion board posted by Andrej Glavic.
What I did:
I currently own a MacBook Pro 2020 and tried to install ubuntu using the instructions from the ubuntu website itself:
https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/create-a-usb-stick-on-macos#1-overview
Sadly, I ran into multiple issues where the USB was unreadable or any attempt to boot the USB would crash my computer and decrease its processing speed. I spent a long time trying to fix errors and going through a lot of trial and error before giving up.
The solution
Thanks to Andrej Glavic's discussion posts on learn I decided to use a virtual machine for ubuntu and followed the instructions in this link to set up linux: https://brb.nci.nih.gov/seqtools/installUbuntu.html
The virtual machine was a safer option in my case (no crashing or damage) and allows you to experiment with different software.
It took me about 30 minutes to install Virtual box and ubuntu into the machine and everything ran smoothly.
I hope this helps anyone who's also had trouble installing ubuntu using the USB method!
