Our question is how have sea otter populations changed over the past 40 years in the Santa Barbara Channel and has the implementation of MPA's in that area had an impact on those populations? We will be getting the majority of our data from DataOne, from PISCO, USGS, and the SBC LTER and searching for the term sea otters (Enhydra lutris), spatially constrained to the Santa Barbara Channel. DataOne has sea otter sighting datasets from LTER (2007-2020) and USGS has datasets (1985-2014, 1998-2012), 2016, 2017) on sea otter census and range expansion/habitat use in the Santa Barbara channel.
This is an exciting question. One suggestion may be to focus on a specific time period as a starting point and then see if you can extend it. Let's further discuss tomorrow during lab.
