Actually, I am wondering if the current way of displaying the metadata is
correct:
jumping from the metadata of a picture to the metadata of another is a tedious
process. I suggest metadata could be displayed as a pane which could be
switched on
or off and which would always display the metadata of the selected thumbnail if
there
is only one thumbnaili selected. If more than one thumbnail is selected, the
metadata
pane could be left empty, or it could display only the metadata which are the
same
for all selected pictures.

or meta data could be displayed in a tab of the left panel when a photo is
maximised
(then jBrout GUI would need some graphical stuff to let the user know that a
panel
can be opened when a photo is maximised since keying Inser is hardly
discoverable)

I agree , but not for the "or": we could have it both ways. Having metadata in
full
view would be nice too since it is often when viewing a photo in full view that
we
wonder: "how was thios taken?". But having easy and permanent metadata display
in
thumbnail view is useful too because it can allow to select pictures on metadata
values. Often, for example, I want to select pictures which were taken at the
same
ISO, or the same speed...
About the left pane in full view: I agree the Insert key is quite non-standard.
I
don't know about the Linux world, but nowhere is the Insert key used this way in
Windows AFAIK. IMO, using the F10 key would have been slightly better since F10
is
normally used to reach the main menu and the left pane can be perceived as a
kind of
menu. Anyhow, there should be a mouse-only way to switch the left pane off or
on.
Some software use a nice trick: buttons or panes which appear only when the
mouse
pointer comes to a specific portion of the screen. For example, jBrout could
display
the left pane if the mouse pointer hits the left border of the window or
screen. Once
popped on, I suggest the left pane should have a close button which would allow
to
close it with the mouse.
