Resync with 4.0 after 4.0 beta release #66

I'm waiting to resync with 4.0 until it enters beta to be sure that there are no other major breaking changes in the API for the eventual 4.0 release.

I will also fix any outstanding issues then.

We have been resynced with the current master, which is up to date with the 4.0 beta. there SHOULDN'T be any breaking changes between now and release, but we'll see, I guess.
