@bryantbhowell I've updated places where etree.tostring() had no encoding variable to include encoding='unicode' so that etree returns a unicode string, as discussed in #18 Please check and merge if possible so that we can use this in Python 3 as well

Closing this because it was based on the 4.0 branch that has been replaced by the 5.0 branch
