Add viewer for street-level imagery like in iD. #697

Hello, can you add the ability to view street level imagery for adding things like businesses that aren’t there and adding minor features like fire hydrants and whatnot? Bing’s Ariel imagery licence also extends to streetside and Mapilary is all public imagery. KartaView and Mapilio are also tools with an open licence and an API, and Mapilary also uses AI to find street signs. The iD editor supports all of this.

Looking for more feedback on this. My first impulse is to close this as out-of-scope for a mobile editor, because you should be on location. But I accept (and appreciate!) that some people use it for armchair mapping so I'd like to hear opinions on how broadly this feature would be used.

As an example, it could be used to properly identify unclear features, and Mapilliary provides AI object recognition to assist in mapping items. But as a mobile editor, there could be a group of editors who only have access to iOS devices (or computers are too slow), or prefer to “armchair map” with a phone’s input methods.

I agree this should be out of scope

Adding Mapillary to GoMap would be a major project with many edge cases that need to be solved. And I don't see the benefit of looking at Mapillary lines and pictures. I agree that the focus should be mobile mapping.

However, there are cases that I find relevant for precisely this reason of optimizing for mobile mapping…

Both topics are for other issues, but I thought I paint a bigger picture here :). HTH

Does Go Map!! have many iPad users? Those are sometimes used while sitting in an armchair.

A very rough approximation is 7% iPad users. It would be great to have a weighted average WRT contributions. I floated the idea of including device type in the upload metadata but there was some resistance to that on privacy grounds. Edit: Just checked and in terms of sessions iPad is slightly more than 10%, so pretty popular!
