In the following assignment, we students were required to create a schematic map of a known place. The place that I have picked is our campus, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.
I picked this location because I was a teaching assistant in our degree and am currently pursuing research work under a professor in the HS department. So, I am quite familiar with the campus map.

I have chosen to create this schematic map of the iconic bridges of Srinagar because it is my hometown, and I am deeply connected to its rich history and culture. The targeted audience for this map includes tourists, history enthusiasts, and locals who wish to explore or rediscover the city's architectural heritage. The design choices for this map were made to highlight both the aesthetic and functional aspects of the city's bridge network. I opted for a blend of traditional and minimalist style with clear, bold lines to represent the bridges and canals, ensuring that the map is easy to read and visually appealing. Each bridge is named to emphasize its historical significance, and the soft, pastel background contrasts with the prominent blue of the river and bridges, drawing the viewer's attention to these crucial landmarks.
I chose serif typefaces (Abril Fatface and Playfair Display) for the map text to evoke a sense of tradition and timelessness, reflecting the historical importance of these structures. The inclusion of a brief descriptive text aims to provide context and entice viewers to explore the architectural marvels of Srinagar, while the compass rose ensures orientation. This map not only serves as a practical guide but also as a tribute to the serene beauty and heritage of Srinagar.

Swami Vivekananda is considered as one of the greatest spiritual leader and social worker of India. He was born in Calcultta (now Kolkata) in 1863. As the assignment, here I have shown the schematic map of the major places where he was born, got learnings and worked in Kolkata. This will serve as a guide map to the tourists who want to visit all the places which were most important to Swamiji's life and can be visited in one day by car.
The River Ganga is considered as reference. There are 2 parallel roads on the eastern and western bank, namely B.T. Road and G.T. Road. The railway lines and nearby rail stations are also considered as major landmarks and influences the road network.
The source is Swamiji's House (Vivekananda Road) and final destination is Belur Math. The interim destinations are Ramakrishna Math at Baranagar, Dakshineswar Kali Temple at Dakshineswar.
Tracing is done on the above map. The color for the tracing has been choosen as per Swamiji's attire. Mostly 45-90 tracing has been done. However, due to bend of the river and accordingly, the curves in the road, all the tracing are not purely in 45-90 degrees. An approximation is done near the temple, as the road shown on the map is not really for car driving and the tourists are supposed to walk there. This is known to the people who regularly visits there or stays near by.
Other prominent establishments are shown here, which will help tourist to have mental maps, understand their locations, or use a different transportation if required, or drop or join with other tourists. For this purpose, I have shown Girish Park Metro Station, Shobhabazar Metro Station, Indian Statistical Institute, Ballyghat Rail Station, Belur Rail station and Belur Math Rail Station. Rail/Metro Stations are shown as green triangle, Indian statistical Institute is shown as red circle and the places of visit are shown as red star.
In this schematic view, I have shown the necessary routes, river along with bridge to cross, and icons with label and distances. The team color has been choosen as per Swamiji's attire.

Tourist Guide Map of Nainital, Uttarakhand I have created a semantic map of Nainital for tourists to help them navigate the famous places in Nainital, Uttarakhand, which is known for its lake and scenic views. This map will make it easy for tourists to visit these places and have a seamless experience.
To create this map, I followed a step-by-step approach, as mentioned below:
Step 1: Select the specific areas and locations that will be required to guide a tourist.
Reason behind choosing this specific area: I have used this horizontal view and frame because it covers almost all the famous places in Nainital.
Step 2: Mapping paths within the Chosen Map
In this map, I have highlighted the main pathways, such as roads, which cover most parts of the city along with the city roads leading to the famous places. it helped me tracking the required elements in the map i,e Roads, lakes and etc.
Step 3: Basic Mental model for the Required Map.
Here, using a grid and geometry, I have tried to provide the pathways that are relevant as per the requirement. Given that it is a hilly area and it was a bit difficult to fit the entire map into a 45-90 grid, I did my best to use it wherever possible.
Step 4: Adding elements, icons, and typography according to visual hierarchy.
Step 5: Finalizing the map with legends and titles.
Thankyou!

Palmanova, is a city located in northeastern Italy's Friuli Venezia Giulia region, is a distinctive star-shaped fortress city founded in 1593 by the Venetian Republic.Designed as an ideal Renaissance city, its nine-pointed star layout served both military and utopian purposes, reflecting advanced engineering to withstand attacks. The city features three concentric rings of fortifications, a hexagonal central square (Piazza Grande), and significant gates (Porta Udine, Porta Aquileia, and Porta Cividale).
The primary audience for this map is tourists visiting Palmanova. This includes general tourists interested in exploring the unique star-shaped city layout, as well as specific groups such as history enthusiasts and military history scholars.
Purpose: The purpose of this schematic map is to guide visitors through Palmanova, highlighting its historical and cultural landmarks, unique urban design, and significant military structures.
This sketch outlined the main elements of Palmanova that needed to be included, such as the star-shaped fortifications, central plaza (Piazza Grande), radial streets, and key landmarks
Using OpenStreetMap (OSM) as a base, relevant aspects of Palmanova were traced. This included the star-shaped fortifications, the central plaza, the main radial streets, and significant buildings and structures.
The city's layout was abstracted into simpler geometric shapes to create a clear and easy-to-understand schematic map. The star-shaped fortifications were represented with straight lines and regular angles, while the central plaza and radial streets were simplified into basic shapes like hexagons and lines.
The map includes the following elements:

As someone who was born and brought up in Delhi, I chose to design a schematic of the iconic Connaught Place. This map covers an area of approx. 2.5 km2 of Connaught Place aka CP, which is one of the main financial, commercial and business centres in Delhi.
The purpose of this schematic map is to provide a clear and simplified visual guide for tourists visiting CP. The map highlights key landmarks, attractions and metro stations, making navigating and exploring the area easier for visitors. It is beneficial for first-time visitors who want to experience the cultural, historical, and commercial aspects of Connaught Place.
Initially, I referred to Google maps to get a bird's eye view of the area.
I used Excalidraw to prepare this mental sketch consisting of major roads and a few tourist attractions located in the area.
Finally, I prepared the schematic map using Figma.
Navigation and Planning: The map offers a simplified view of Connaught Place, enabling tourists to plan their route effectively. They can easily locate metro stations for convenient travel, and the key attractions and institutions are clearly marked to help visitors prioritize their visits.
Centralized Reference Point: Central Park is prominently placed in the middle of the map, serving as a central reference point from which tourists can orient themselves.
Ease of Use: The use of distinct icons and colours for different types of locations ensures that the map is easy to read and interpret, even for first-time visitors.

Title: Map of the village of Indpur, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh
The chosen village of Indpur has a population of around 4500 people and majorly suffers from problems in the areas of lack of a sustainable source of income. The idea of the map is to understand the overall presence of multiple types of houses, schools, medical shops, and the presence of multiple types of vegetation, which could prove to be a potential source of income for the villagers. So, a mental model of the whole sketch was first made, and then a relevant map of the whole village with all 8 wards was compared to arrive at the final sketch.
The targeted audience for this map includes government officials, NGOs/any other independent bodies who wish to explore/ bring about any developmental plans to the village. The design choices for this map were made to highlight the presence of residential and agricultural land in the village. The whole village was not only present on an inclined terrain but also lacked many basic amenities like drainage and drinking water, and hence, efforts were made to ensure that all these attributes were clearly captured on the map.
