Improving the FreeBSD Discord Experience #29

Open kfv opened 2 years ago

This issue is open for brainstorming ideas to improve the FreeBSD Discord experience, especially for newcomers and beginners. Please share and discuss your ideas and feel free to edit this comment (or ping me to do so if you lack permission) to add/edit/remove an item to the following checklist.

I request you research and take a look at other well-formed communities to see how they've grown and what they've done to shape their community on Discord.

IDEAS / BRAINSTORM

Thank you so much, @bsdlabs/everyone.

Add example for more or different categorisation scheme

Some ideas from me:

"Levelling bot" to track chat, stream, voice minutes for each user , with XP/levels.

We want to encourage activity, and in particular things we can do on Discord that cant or arent done elsewhere, like streaming games, porting and AMA sessions, etc.

Our welcome/first channel is the #lobby and was intented as a break the ice kind of place.

Are we thinking of something more specific for newbies? Do we mean discord newbies, freebsd newbies or both? If so, should this newbie specific channel be the default channel? If so, why, if not, why not? How will this channel work with #lobby if its not the default? How will people know about it?

Set up a few regular events/sessions

Put a call out for people to commit to and run regular sessions, like porting, live streaming games, AMA's, etc. Regular sessions of anything give us an opportunity to a) promote them regularly b) put them in https://meet.bsd.to so people can prepare and calendar for them

FreeBSD Gaming Servers

Some of these ideas have come up in the past, and this could dovetail with 'regular sessions'

Integrations

What Discord integrations exist out there that might be valuable for our Discord users and/or the broader community?

If I have any time next week I can start looking for bots and collabing with @lcook on getting them implemented. Would be great to have that gaming channel be a bit more active :)

That sounds exciting. What kind of bot behavior are you looking at?
