DoE req# 67
Note variable search results reported in the below email.
If there is already appropriate search constructs/syntax to cover the
requirement to return say "all projects dealing with weeds", "all projects
dealing with pests", etc. it would be good to know these so that appropriate
instructions can be prepared for users.
Otherwise, tweaking the algorithm to return a more comprehensive result would
be desirable.
Email from Simon Stratford:
Guys,
Take the below as a user observation rather than a defect and something to
address. This is not a priority for us at all as we’d rather work through our
current list of enhancements before addressing any issues such as these below.
Cheers
Simon

Issues with the ALA MERIT Search Tool
Method: The MERIT search tool appears to be based on:
• An 'exact' search (ignoring case).
• It is an OR search for two or more words.
• Not sure if an ‘AND’ search is possible (single quotes are ignored).
The search results have some unusual outcomes that highlights some issues that
need to be addressed.
Below are counts of projects for various searches.
Search # Projects Comment
weed 339
weeds 179
weeds weed 383
WONS 28 10 WONS not listed for Weed Search
weeds weed WONS 386
weed treatment 372
weeds treatment 377
pest 210
pests 21
pest treatment 351
pests treatment 329
pest and disease 211 'and' ignored
pest and disease management 508
pest disease 211
pest weed 387
pests weeds 184
koala 7
koalas 5
goat 9
goats 9 Different projects
Clearly these issues need to be addressed. For example, the only way to get a
comprehensive list of projects that relate to weeds is to search for 'weeds
weed WONS'.
Proposed Solutions
I would suggest the solutions for these issues are:
• Make the search smarter by including related keywords in a look-up list for
key phases so a search for weed includes 'weeds weed WONS'. At least include
plurals. There are some problems with using an ‘includes’ option which will
show ‘pesticide’ for a search on ‘pest’ for example.
• Add a second search tool that has a drop down list for the agreed list of
ACTIVITIES. This would only search in the activities field. This is probably
what most people want information about. For example:
► Fencing
► Pest and Disease Management
► Fire Management
► Pest and Disease Management
► Weed Treatment
etc
