Is this the preferred way the kids install via composer these days? Personally I prefer to update the JSON manually...

I don't think either way is more or less popular. But if you're only adding a single dependency then this is a good way because it automatically also pulls it down, saving you a context switch (IDE -> CLI) and some time as Composer doesn't bother checking all your dependencies. Just a suggestion, feel free to discard if you prefer manual adding.
